Six Early Stories
Published in Paperback by Green Integer Books (October, 2003)
Authors: Thomas Mann and Burton Pike
Average review score:

Post-Romantic Fiction
In these overlooked early stories, the great German Novelist Thomas Mann, best know for his novella Death in Venice, and his massive novel, Magic Mountain (set in Switzerland), experiments with the character of the sensitive (sometimes sickly) artist skittering on the outskirts, or being powerfully pulled in, to romantic and philosophical infatuation. Said to mark the introduction of psychology into romantic fiction, the stories (such as Fallen, 1898, and The Will to Happiness, 1896) were written in the so-called Gay Nineties (the 1890s)--the decade which took with it Oscar Wilde and Friedrich Nietzsche. In these short stories Mann is playful but works with a precociously masterful touch. His themes are romance, deception, and the limitations of previous literary convention. In one story a desirable actress turns out to be a prostitute, in another a homely woman admired for her mind turns down the artist after he changes his about her desirability, and in perhaps the most powerful story, a most desirable spouse is revealed to be the exact opposite--perhaps. Nietzsche's preoccupation with surfaces, the infinite artistic allure of deception, and the gulf separating the outside world from that of the human mind are deftly handled in these early stories by an acknowledged master of the fictional form.

Amazing book!
... While many facts in this book are outdated, a lot of others are not. Also, it's a wonderful resource of history of the Internet for anyone who would like to observe and grasp the progress Internet has made since 1994. In this, historical respect, it's also an amazing book, worth reading for both knowledge, and for fun!

Virtual Monopoly: Building an Intellectual Property Strategy for Creative Advantage--From Patents to Trademarks, From Copyrights to Design Rights
Published in Hardcover by Nicholas Brealey (December, 2001)
Author: Christopher G. Pike
Average review score:

Virtual Monopoly
Christopher Pike is not your run-of-the mill intellectual property adviser. Although qualified as a patent and trade mark attorney, his experience in dealing with business management issues comes through very directly when reading this book.
It is not always appreciated that there is a whole host of available strategies for businesses which are, knowingly and in some cases not, involved in generating intellectual property. Intellectual property generators often need commercially minded guidance appropriate to their markets and their approach to business as to how their intellectual property can be used to create value. Pike has identified and crystallised models and concepts in a way which makes the grander themes of intellectual property, often held as an impenetrable area for those outside its day-to-day practice, readily understandable. He sets out a useful vocabulary of concepts and terms, describing intellectual property as a currency used in buy-sell relations and for measuring creative advantage.
I suspect that Pike may be at the forefront of a new area of consulting which is much-needed but so-far overlooked. The book he has written will surely be a useful tool to a broad range of readers, particularly those looking for insight into modern approaches to intellectual property strategy. Whilst other books on IP may be found hidden in the law section of a bookshop, this will almost certainly be found in amongst the bestselling management books.

The Starlight Crystal
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Author: Christopher Pike
Average review score:

The Starlight Crystal - Christopher Pike
A book of reincarnation and living different lives while still living the same life. Sounds confusing! Well, the book is one that you need to read every word of to soak it all in. Paige, and 18 year old young woman, sets off to a journey in space. Her last week on earth, she meets a young man, Tem. The plot picks up when they say good-bye and follows Paige, through an 'endless' life. It was a good book and you really feel for the character and what she went through. Again, you will have to concentrate, for this book is confusing with it's plot and time scheme. I would recommend this to young adults who have interests in Sci-Fi, and are interesting in 'getting into' a book, not just reading for fun. I rate this 4 stars. Another great for Pike, but confusing none the less.

Glorious
At 20, I might not belong to the intended age-group for Pike's YA novels. But I can still remember reading them a couple of years ago, and every now and then I re-read one or two of them, just because they are so amazing.

This is one book that I have read a lot of times, because it's so astonishing! I just love the melancholy that simmers within every page until the very end. Still there is so much hope embedded in this story, along with a very philosophical approach to life. The thought of life living itself on and on again is scary, although fascinating.

When I picked up the first one of Christopher Pike's books, I had no idea what to expect. But I was totally blown away by the mystical drama about love and hate that was "See you later". Of course I didn't stop at that one.

The starlight crystal is trully one of the best YA novels Pike has written. I even wish it wasn't called a YA novel, since nobody is too old or too mature to appreciate the wisdom printed on the pages of this wonderful book.
